Insider’s Guide to Winemaking
All you need to know from a small vineyard in northern Spain
Spain has a lot of culture, nature, cuisine, and charm to offer. I recently had the chance to visit the Costa Brava in northern Spain. I think it’s one of the best countries for food tourism since Spaniards are so passionate about their food.
Maybe one of Spain’s best-known claims to fame is wine. Spain has many world-famous wine regions including Rioja, Jerez, Ribera del Duero, Priorat, and many more. Just a little over an hour outside of Barcelona in the province of Girona, you can find El Celler d’en Marc in Palamós. It’s run by Marc and Lut, a lovely couple originally from Belgium.
The couple moved to Empordà to start their second careers in winemaking. With a background in pharmacy, Lut was excellently poised to understand winemaking from a molecular perspective. With help from their neighbors and other local winemakers, they managed to grow their knowledge of natural winemaking and now produce over ten types of wine.
As Lut led me and my companions around their vineyard, production facility, and wine cellar, we soaked up the history, science, and magic of the space. As Lut shared the knowledge they learned from other winemakers, I’ll share what she passed on to us.
